On March 14, this paper published a letter purporting to educate us on “The hallmarks of fascism.” The letter included 14 items that were developed by a Dr. Lawrence Britt as “defining characteristics” of fascist regimes. But there is no Dr. Lawrence Britt, only a Laurence Britt, with no doctorate, who is at best an amateur historian but hardly an expert in any field.
See, there is this thing called Google and this other thing called Snopes, both of which can be accessed via something called the Internet, that allow you to check if someone is fibbing. Britt’s list (first developed more than 10 years ago) is back in the news because a crummy Internet meme has been circulating that rips off his list; I suspect it is from this meme that our letter writer developed those profound views on the fascist danger we supposedly face.
For those interested in serious academic studies of fascism, I would recommend the writings of Zeev Sternhell, Stanley Payne or local scholar Paul Gottfried.
