It's hard to imagine anyone reading that column and not knowing from personal experience--if not their own, friends, family, acquaintances, neighbors--that this is dead-on accurate.

It seems like a person is lucky, now, if their $8.00-an-hour job is just 15 minutes away from where they live, rather than 45 minutes away. (And this would be the same person who, a few years ago, was making $18.00 an hour.)
