In what strikes me as a genuinely silly argument, conservative syndicated columnist Jonah Goldberg tries to answer those who see a connection between the civil rights movement and the current battle over gay marriage.Goldberg complains about the "odd way" in which the civil rights movement is now be...

What exactly is Gottfried's position???

He thinks Goldberg is a lightweight who tortures history to support a political point?

Everyone but him is wrong?

Other than that, he really doesn't seem to commit himself. Or maybe:

He gets paid to do this no matter how muddled and pointless his column.

I always thought he was nut, Goldberg that is. But I thought well maybe he's just a bright guy who I profoundly disagree with.

Then I watched Jon Stewart just demolish him one night and I went online and read a few more of his columns which were gibberish.

The guy writes prolifically but it's mostly mediocre.

And it comes back to why should I care what Goldberg thinks?

Who cares what Jon Stewart thinks ? Goldberg writes some interesting stuff and some drek like all political writers of either stripe.

News isn't allowed to be funny?

Sure it is.

BUT.... some think it's really the news......

Not surprisingly, a second-by-second analysis of The Daily Show's audio and visual content found considerably more humor than substance -- Stewart himself has insisted that he is a comedian and not a journalist. A similar analysis of network coverage found considerably more hype than substance in broadcast newscasts. Examples of such hype included references to polls, political endorsements and photo opportunities.

"In an absolute sense, we should probably be concerned about both of those sources, because neither one is particularly substantive. It's a bottom-line industry and ratings-driven. We live in an 'infotainment' society, and there certainly are a number of other sources available."

A poll released earlier this year by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that 21 percent of people aged 18 to 29 cited "The Daily Show" and "Saturday Night Live" as a place where they regularly learned presidential campaign news.

By contrast, 23 percent of the young people mentioned ABC, CBS or NBC's nightly news broadcasts as a source.

I think most people are smart enough to recognize what is presented as fact and what is presented as parody.

Do you deal with the general public?
