A 28-year-old Denver man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for failing to summon help for a woman who fatally overdosed at his home.

Jesse E. Gettle, of the 200 block of North Muddy Creek Road, allegedly left the unconscious woman outside, next to his garage, for several hours while he went to work. He called 911 only after returning home from work that afternoon, police said.

Besides the involuntary manslaughter charge, he also faces a misdemeanor count for abuse of a corpse.

The 22-year-old woman, who was identified in the criminal complaint as Amanda Martin of Stevens, was found dead on Aug. 7.

Gettle initially told police he and the woman used heroin the previous night and she left his home around 12:30 a.m., according to the district attorney. He told police he did not see her again until coming home from work that afternoon.

However, Gettle later admitted to moving her to her vehicle, which was parked in front of his home, after she lost consciousness, according to the criminal complaint. He then carried her to his detached garage and left her outside when he went to work, police said.

Police found the woman there, according to the complaint, and a deputy coroner pronounced her dead at the scene.

Her cause of death was listed as multiple drug toxicity, according to the Lancaster County coroner.

According to the affidavit, Gettle “either transported and left the unconscious victim, known to be overdosing on heroin/fentanyl, outside alone without calling for medical assistance, or he transported and left the deceased victim outside alone without calling the appropriate authorities.”

Gettle was already at Lancaster County Prison on unrelated charges, according to the Lancaster County district attorney’s office. He was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon on the new charges, via video conference.
