LNP - The dire cost of using fossil fuels

Recommended Posts

The April 18 article "How bad is our air?” clearly points out how our lives are dependent on the actions of others. Research shows that much of our smog and soot, responsible for multiple breathing problems and deaths, is coming from coal-fired power plants west of us.

Over the years, the Environmental Protection Agency has made progress in getting laws passed to reduce pollution of the air we breathe. We all have benefited from the regulations put in place to protect our lives and health.

Now, with Scott Pruitt as head of the EPA under President Donald Trump and the Republican Congress, these protections are being repealed as “too costly.” Too costly for whom? Pruitt is spending millions of taxpayer dollars on luxury living. He is also working to put huge profits in the pockets of billionaires, paid for by the suffering and deaths of untold numbers of Americans.

We in Lancaster County are paying dearly for helping elect those who favor polluting fossil fuels over clean, renewable energy and air quality regulations. Both U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker and U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey indicate by their votes that they are in that group.

We will soon have a chance to elect new representatives. Let us carefully choose those who will protect the health of current and future generations.
