Massive "I Love America" Facebook page, pushing pro-Trump propaganda, is run by Ukrainians

"The "I Love America" Facebook page boasts 1.1 million fans, with viral content that reaches more Facebook users than some of the largest media outlets in the United States. A typical post is a celebration of the U.S. military and patriotism.

There are lots of references to "our country" and "our military." Not mentioned is that the page is managed by ten people based in Ukraine. (There is also one manager from Kazakhstan, one from France, and one from the United States.) A website that was previously linked in the "About" section of the "I Love America" page is registered to Andriy Zyuzikov, an online strategist from the Ukrainian city of Odessa.

The "I Love America" page regularly recycles memes used by the Internet Research Agency, the Russian entity that set up phony Facebook pages to benefit Trump in advance of the 2016 election."

At Least 70 Countries Have Had Disinformation Campaigns, Study Finds

In Vietnam, citizens were enlisted to post pro-government messages on their personal Facebook pages. The Guatemalan government used hacked and stolen social media accounts to silence dissenting opinions. Ethiopia’s ruling party hired people to influence social media conversations in its favor.

Despite increased efforts by internet platforms like Facebook to combat internet disinformation, the use of the techniques by governments around the world is growing, according to a report released Thursday by researchers at Oxford University. Governments are spreading disinformation to discredit political opponents, bury opposing views and interfere in foreign affairs.

The researchers compiled information from news organizations, civil society groups and governments to create one of the most comprehensive inventories of disinformation practices by governments around the world. They found that the number of countries with political disinformation campaigns more than doubled to 70 in the last two years, with evidence of at least one political party or government entity in each of those countries engaging in social media manipulation.

In addition, Facebook remains the No. 1 social network for disinformation, the report said. Organized propaganda campaigns were found on the platform in 56 countries.

“Social media technology tends to empower propaganda and disinformation in really new ways,” said Samantha Bradshaw, a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, a department at Oxford University, and co-author of the study. The institute previously worked with the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate Russian interference around the 2016 campaign.

I am struck by two WaPo articles describing right-wing tactics to 1) promote disinformation about progressive issues and candidates, and 2) quash dissent amongst their own ranks, also using disinformation.

The first (“Conservatives attacked Ocasio-Cortez over a bizarre town hall speaker. Now, a pro-Trump fringe group says they planned the stunt”) describes how a small far-right group used a “fairly well-established tactic for them” of going to a meeting and creating a disturbance that disrupts the meeting and creates chaos. In this case, a woman staged an outburst at an AOC town hall, pretending to be so “fraught” and “upset” about climate change that she exclaimed that “We got to start eating babies!” (revealing a t-shirt with the message “Save the planet. Eat the children.”)  AOC thought the woman was suffering from a mental condition and was having a crisis. AOC handled the situation perfectly, expressing concern for the woman while not diminishing the urgency of climate change. Meanwhile, the incident, originally created by a small group, gets amplified by right-wing news and goes viral, and the right wing starts crowing about how “crazy” the progressives are. And, of course, the loudest rooster is Trump.

The second article (“Trump’s removal would require Republican dissidents. But those who speak out become targets of viral disinformation”) describes how baseless claims are made against any who break with Trump, e.g., Mitt Romney, who is now accused of A) having ties to the Ukrainian gas company of Biden accusations, and B ) conversing with Nancy Pelosi about Republican support for impeaching Trump.

An explosive new study reveals that political misinformation is running rampant on Facebook as the 2020 election approaches. If you have half an hour and would like something to listen to, this is not boring:

How Internet Trolls And Online Extremists Are 'Hijacking' American Politics

New Yorker staff writer Andrew Marantz spent years with far-right online extremists, embedding with them and watching them spread false news by exploiting social media. His new book is Antisocial.

A Former Fox News Executive Divides Americans Using Russian Tactics

At first glance, the websites Conservative Edition News and Liberal Edition News have only one thing in common: Both have been carefully curated to inflame America’s culture wars.

Conservative Edition News is a repository of stories guaranteed to infuriate the American right. Its recent headlines include “Austin sex-ed curriculum teaches kids how to obtain an abortion” and “HuffPost writer considers Christianity ‘dangerous.’”

On Liberal Edition News, readers are fed a steady diet of content guaranteed to drive liberal voters further left or to wring a visceral response from moderates. One recent story singled out an Italian youth soccer coach who called Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate activist, a “whore.”

The sites are the work of Ken LaCorte, the former Fox News executive who was accused of killing a story about President Trump’s affair with Stormy Daniels, the pornographic film actress, before the 2016 election.

Their content is written by a network of young Macedonians in Veles, a sleepy riverside town that was home to a collection of writers who churned out disinformation during the 2016 presidential election in the United States. Among Mr. LaCorte’s network was one writer who helped peddle a conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton had ties to a pedophile ring.

Revealed: Former Vote Leave data chief accused of pro-Tory 'disinformation'

Thomas Borwick, former Cambridge Analytica consultant, boasted he could use proxy groups on Facebook to 'split anti-Tory vote'. Experts say system 'wide open to abuse'.

Vote Leave’s former chief technology officer boasted to colleagues that he could use unknown online campaign groups to "split the vote" of Conservative opponents, openDemocracy has learned.

Thomas Borwick, a digital consultant closely linked to the Tories, has been accused of “pretending” to be the Green Party after buying social media ads that called on voters in key swing constituencies to “Vote Green” and “support your local Green candidate”.

A former colleague of Borwick’s said that the 32-year-old deputy chairman of the Cities of London and Westminster Conservatives had previously discussed using anonymous-looking campaigns to buy political ads to "split the vote" of anti-Tory parties. The ads, he said, could be bought unbeknownst to the party in whose name they appear.

A previously-unknown company owned by Borwick called 3rd Party Ltd bought ads on Facebook and Instagram that have been seen at least 200,000 times in less than a week, Wired revealed. The company, which was only set up this month, is also running social media ads to “Save Brexit”.

This general election has seen a sharp increase in the number of third-party campaigns pushing messages that chime with political parties, a practice that exploits loopholes in British electoral law, and that fits in with the SuperPAC-filled culture of US election campaigns, where Borwick previously worked.

Republicans are trying out the old idea that if you repeat a lie enough times, it becomes conventional wisdom. From Donald Trump down to Moscow Mitch McConnell, the story they're running with is the "do nothing" House.

As The Washington Post notes, Trump has used the phrase six times on Twitter since Monday. McConnell has played along, complaining that in her "rushed & partisan impeachment process," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said "Not one word on the outstanding legislation the American people actually need. Nothing on the USMCA, or the NDAA, or funding for our armed forces." That's blatantly not true, as Pelosi has been involved in negotiations with the White House for weeks on the USMCA trade proposal. And the House appropriators—who have already completed 10 of 12 appropriations bills—have been working for weeks with Senate appropriators to complete the spending bills that will keep government running past the next deadline of Dec. 20.

Not to mention the literally hundreds of bills the House has passed that McConnell has refused to bring to the Senate floor. That includes gun safety legislation. It includes legislation to protect the next election from malign foreign interference. It includes legislation to protect insurance coverage for people with pre-existing health conditions. It includes legislation to try to stem the acceleration of climate change. The House has been passing literally life-and-death issue bills. The Post counted up: The House has passed 542 total measures, 389 of which are bills as opposed to resolutions (such as naming post offices). The Senate in total has only passed 384 measures—bills and resolutions—and just 91 bills.

What McConnell has been doing is pushing through judges, including a record number of judges deemed not qualified by the American Bar Association. Trump has nominated eight unqualified judges in three years, and six of them have been confirmed by McConnell's Republicans. One of them, who is so extreme in her anti-abortion zeal that she opposes surrogacy and in vitro fertilization, was confirmed this week, along with seven others.
